Kollywood celebrated director Karthik Subbaraj is back to big screens after a hiatus of four and a half years. His latest film Jigarthanda Double X starring Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah is all set to hit the screens on November 3, 2023. The film is not a sequel but the second film in Jigarthanda franchise. The film successfully created hype around it with its intriguing promotional material. Suresh Productions and Asian Cinemas has brought the film in Telugu. Netflix acquired OTT streaming rights. Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023) Movie: Story Review

If we go into the details of Jigarthanda DoubleX story Krupa (SJ Surya) is a police aspirant but unfortunately got involved in a murder case and get imprisoned. Alias Ceaser (Raghava Lawrence) is a dreadful goon who rules Kurnool. Star hero Jai Krishna (Shine Tom Chaako) who is also chief minister aspirant finds tough to handle Ceaser and seeks help of his brother played by Naveen Chandra who is a ruthless police officer in forest area. 

Naveen Chandra releases prisoners who are police aspirants before they came to jail and assigns them of killing four goons who are causing trouble to his brother Jai Krishna politically. Krupa is one among them and he is assigned to kill Alias Ceaser. Krupa slowly joins Krupa saying that he will make a film with him as a hero. Ceaser is interested in films and want to do a film as a hero.  What happens next, did Krupa manages to eliminate Ceaser ? How is the forest related to the Ceaser ? Forms the rest of the story.

Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023) Film: Artists Review

Raghava Lawrence gave an impressive performance. He did very well especially in emotional scenes. He played the role as a ruthless goon effortlessly. He even looked stout for his role. He looks like a raging bull and his intensity gives a feeling like he is a ticking time bomb.

SJ Suryah played his role to the T. He is apt as a timid guy who acts as a fearless guy to avoid auspiciousness on him. But, one must feel disappointed if expect his usual and typical comedy timing in the film. His role mostly carries serious looks in intense situations. 

Nimisha Sajayan impresses with her performance. Though she was seen as a nagging wife but later reveals her love towards her husband. Naveen Chandra did a key role and he looks menacing. Shine Tom Chaako played an extended cameo and he is in his element. 

Jigarthanda DoubleX Telugu Movie: Techinical Review

Jigarthanda Double X, written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj as a theme treads its first part where an innocent is driven to make a film with dreaded gangster. But, here there is a mission to kill that gangster. The introduction scenes, setup and characters takes time. But, once the main plot is set in motion, Jigarthanda Double X engages with its intriguing narration and terrific performances. Karthi Subbaraj has showed conviction in story telling. The interval sequence is riveting with tight narration. He perfectly balanced with class and mass moments in the first half and ofcourse with his mark all over it.

It is the second half where the film treads a similiar path of saving forest tribe from land grabbing politics using police force. Though the elephant tusk smuggling and deforestation elements were incorporated right from the beginning, they seem out of the place once the story totally shifts towards forest and problems about its people. Emotional payoffs worked to some extent. Using Cinema as a weapon to win over evil is executed well. 

The music by Santosh Narayanan enhances the movie, particularly during the introduction sequences, and scenes where tension needs to build up. Thirunavukkarusu's cinematography is stunning. He used various colour palettes for each sequence and it looks like a visual feast onscreen. The editing by Shafique Mohammed Ali could have been better at parts. The film's production values are praiseworthy. The 70's look is replicated flawlessly and art department did a commendable job.

Jigarthanda Double X Movie: Rating Analysis

On a whole, Jigarthanda Double X is a complete directors film backed by strong technicalities and riveting performances. However, the film is short of establishing strong emotional conflict and the tonal shift in second half restricted it from being an impressive outing. Anyways one can watch it for honest and passionate filmmaking. Going by all these, CineJosh goes with 2.25 Rating for Jigarthanda Double X.
