Tamil Tambis extremely biased. Tamil stars have been making substantial inroads into the Telugu cinema industry, with Rajinikanth's 'Jailer' raking in an impressive £30 million in the two Telugu states, closely followed by Tamil superstar Vijay's recent release, 'Leo,' which accumulated £20 million. These successes clearly demonstrate the growing influence of Tamil actors in Telugu cinema. Even 'Bichagadu 2' managed to secure a noteworthy £15 million, further underscoring the magnetic appeal of Tamil stars in the Telugu film industry. However, the converse is not true for Telugu film stars in Tamil Nadu.
Sunil Narang, a prominent exhibitor-distributor, opines, 'Tamil audiences may not be as receptive to films from other regions as their Telugu counterparts. Telugu audiences readily embrace movies from various languages, including Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam, as long as the content resonates with them. Unfortunately, Telugu films don't receive a similar enthusiastic response from Tamil audiences.'
In contrast, Tamil stars such as Suriya, Karthi, Dhanush, and Vikram have successfully expanded their market presence in the Telugu film industry, with their market values ranging from £5 to £15 million. However, Telugu superstars like Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, Ram Charan, and Jr. NTR have not been able to establish a similarly strong foothold in Tamil Nadu.
Sunil Narang remains optimistic about the future, saying, 'I am confident that things will improve for Telugu superstars in the days to come, especially since most Telugu films are now designed to have pan-Indian appeal. We warmly welcome Tamil stars in the two Telugu states for their exceptional performances and innovative storytelling. We hope that Tamil audiences will also develop a fondness for our films, considering that our stars have already garnered a dedicated fan base in North India.'
However, Sunil Narang acknowledges that the monumental success of films like 'Baahubali,' 'RRR,' and 'Pushpa,' which collectively grossed over £220 million in Tamil Nadu, is an exception. 'These films were exceptional in their own league, given their aggressive promotion and the Tamil audience's enthusiastic embrace of the larger-than-life narratives, replete with action and romance. We aspire to see other Telugu stars carve a niche in Kollywood, as every star aims to expand their fan base,' he emphasizes.
While Mahesh Babu's 'Bharat Ane Nenu' crossed the £8 million mark in Tamil Nadu, other Telugu stars like Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, and Ravi Teja have not managed to replicate the same level of success in the neighboring state.
