Versatile hero Dhanush is getting ready to mesmerize all with his intense performance in his upcoming film Raayan. Excitement is on as Dhanush himself helmed the project and it happens to be his milestone 50th film. Let us find out what impact he created on movie lovers as Raayan.
Raayan's story is all about a youngster who goes to any extent for his sister whom he loves dearly after bringing up his two brothers and sister undergoing all trials and tribulations.
Raaya aka Karthavaraaya (Dhanush) leads a calm and serene life taking care of his two brothers Muthuvel (Sundeep Kishan), Manickam (Kalidas Jayaram), and sister Durga (Dushara Vijayan). However sudden turns of events change their lives upside down. What are those changes and how they are connected to Meghalai (Aparna Baalamurali), Police Officer Sargunam (Prakash Raj), gangsters Sethu (SJ.Suryah), Durai (Saravanan) and others form the interesting part.
Dhanush performed sincerely in his role. He showed good expressions and emotions and elevated the scenes with his performance. However the role is tailor made for him and he played such roles earlier umpteen times.
Sundeep Kishan did well and impresses with his mannerisms and language. He got a meaty role and did it effectively. Dushara Vijayan performed well in the role of sister and showed intense expressions and emotions elevating couple of scenes. Varalakshmi Sarath Kumar got an inconsequential role. Prakash Raj performed his role accordingly. Saravanan made his presence felt and S.J.Suryah showed his acting talent with his mannerisms. Selva Raaghavan did his job well while Aparna Baalamurali as slum girl who is head over heels for Sundeep Kishan fits the role aptly and did justice.
Raayan story penned by Dhanush is all about brother's love for his sister. Many such films came earlier and Dhanush followed the same template right from the start till the finish but with twist and emotion. After starting the narration with the flashback, he showed the love and bonding between brothers and sister before dwelling into the developments in their lives when gangsters enter.
Dhanush mainly concentrated on the emotions. He emerged successful in showing them on the screen but on the downside the characters and story turns predictable at times.
As Dhanush directed the film, expectations as soared and viewers expected more creative and novel from him. He paid attention to elevating the characters with interesting scenes and some of them left an impact indeed. Fans of Dhanush will get mass treat and feast from him as there are many intense action elements. Free tweaks here and there would have added value to the film.
The editing of Prasanna GK is ok but could have been far better. Om Prakash cinematography is good and he showed the locations in a realistic and rich manner. AR. Rahman's music is adequate and elevated the scenes with his background music. Production values are rich.
Altogether, Raayan turns out to be predictable yet somewhat emotional with a couple of interesting sequences. Dhanush for all his hardwork as an actor has tried to show his mark in writing, story, screenplay and direction. Considering all these points, Cinejosh goes with a 2.5 rating for Raayan.
