Mohanlal's L2-Empuraan directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran is releasing on 27 March 2025. Interest is increasing as the film happens to be the sequel to the hit film Lucifer. Prithviraj Sukumaran's Lucifer turned out to be a sensation in Malayalam, which inspired Mega Star Chiranjeevi to remake as Godfather. However, this time, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mohanlal didnot give any change for others to remake the sequel. The film is relasing in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi simultaneously along with Malayalam. Let us see whether Mohanlal recreated Lucifer magic with L2-Emuraan at the box office.
L2-Empuraan story revolves around the influential person who weilds considerable clout in politics and his fearful and dangerous backdrop and how he deals with the clear and present danger. Politics of Kerala takes a drastic turn with CM Jatin Ramdas (Tovino Thomas) taking a sensational decision to walk out of the party and start his own political outfit and join hands with Balraj (Abhimanyu Singh).
Where this leads to and what forces all powerful Ab'Raam Khureshi aka Stephen Nedumpally (Mohanlal) to step in before everything goes out of hand and how Jatin Ramdas' sister Priyadarshini (Manju Warrier) react and who is Zayed Masood (Prithviraj Sukumaran) form the rest of the narration.
Mohanlal with his screenpresence steals the show. Even if there is no story and his character is weakly portrayed, he makes a powerful and stunning impact. He appears on the screen after a longtime on the screen way into the story but it is worth a wait as he drives crazy with the powerful introduction and from there on he drives the story forward.
He enacts breathtaking action sequences effortlessly defying his age and everyone applauds him wholeheartedly. He even took pains to dub for his character in Telugu and this shows his commitment to the 24 crafts.
Manju Warrier is ok and she came up with singular expression as the woman in distress. Tovino Thomas looked vibrant in the role of the CM and that's it. His role should have had more twists to make it more interesting. Abhimanyu Singh looked menacing and he played such roles earlier. Others like Indrajith Sukumaran, Eriq Ebouaney, Jerome Flynn, Saikumar, Baiju Santhosh and Suraj Venjaramoodu performed according to the roles.
L2-Empuraan story penned by Prithviraj Sukumaran continues from where he ended Lucifer. The story sails through smoothly with the developments in the Kerala politics and then the stylish introduction of Mohanlal as Abraam Khureshi. Prithviraj Sukumaran while stuck to the Kerala nativity in the Lucifer, decided to add an international angle in Empuraan.
He intelligently blended the Chinese-British Nexus and the Indo-Arab nexus connected to Abraam Khureshi. However, for some this may be confusing as there are multiple intelligent agencies out to outsmart one another. The narration sails through smoothly with story taking a predictable turn making viewers wait for the entry of Mohanlal. Mohanlal's entry and with in few minutes, the first half ends with an interesting interval bang.
The second half is all about the cat and mouse game between Khureshi and the baddies and the political developments in Kerala. They are interstingly narrated but at a slow pace. However viewers ignore all of them as they are blended with stylish and sleek action blocks featuring Mohanlal and the entry of Prithviraj Sukumaran excites all.
Prithviraj Sukumaran's story offered nothing new and screenplay and direction turns out to be decent. But the towering screen presence of Mohanlal and the action blocks make the day for the fans. Little fine-tuning of the script and adding interesting developments could have added more spice and zing to the final output. It seems Prithviraj Sukumran decided to keep the emotions and the more intense characterisations in store for the third part L3-The Beginning, the flashback of Mohanlal aka Abraam Khureshi.
Deepak Dev's music is ok. One introduction song is there and is loud but in sync with the story. He elevated the scenes with his intense background score. One may feel it is uni dimensional but it is in sync with the storyline and took the viewers into the story elevating the scenes.
The cinematography of Sujith Vassudevan turned the film into visually appealing giving it a rich feel. He captured the scenes in a stylish manner and made a good impact. Akhilesh Mohan's editing could have been more crispy. There are many scenes that are repeated and slowed the pace of the narration. Dialogues are good and production values are rich.
Altogether, L2-Empuraan is a stylishly made action thriller. Director Prithviraj Sukumaran elevated the heroism of Mohanlal to new heights with action blocks and powerful screenpresence and got the optimum out of the technical team. However the missing emotional connection and lack of real story in the sequel or prequel in his quest to take the story into L3 weaving the Chinese connection played the spoilsport. L2-Empuraan gives delightful treat to Mohanlal fans but for Lucifer fans it turns out to be an okayish film. Considering all these aspects, Cinejosh goes with a 2.5 rating for L2: Empuraan.
