Behind the Movie Dohchay: Director Sudheer Varma’s dexterous handling of crime comedy ‘Swamy Rara’ gave him the immediate call from Akkineni compound for Naga Chaitanya. Into the same genre, Sudheer Varma retained his same old technical team with Kriti Sanon as heroine for this flick. Let us see, whether he robbed our hearts or valuable time?
In the Movie Dohchay: Story begins with a bank robbery executed well by two thieves (Raviteja brothers Raghu Raju, Bharath Raju) who work under their boss Manikyam (Posani). Into the story, here come hero Chandu (Naga Chaitanya) designing simple robberies with his team (Praveen, Sathya and others) to meet his essential family needs. He falls in love with Meera (Kriti Sanon), a medico. Things turn interesting when the first said above bank robbery gets interlocked with the track of Chandu.
When Police Officer Richard (Ravi Babu) begins the chase to catch Chandu red handedly, it’s the game of wits. Chandu is also on a run to release his imprisoned father (Rao Ramesh). What is the flashback connecting Chandu and Manikyam? From nowhere, how Star Hero Bullet Babu (Brahmanandam) joins the narration? How far Chandu succeeded in implementing the plans?
Values of the Movie Dohchay: Crime stories necessarily need sharp screenplay with crisp narration and nerve breaking thrilling moments. After a superb show of ‘Swamy Rara,’ director Sudheer Varma’s confidence grew up to bet on the same genre. However, he isn’t free flowing this time. Lack of content with inept handling of second half knocked out the chances of ‘Dohchay’ from becoming a ‘Swamy Rara.’ Unrealistic situations and extreme cinematic liberties took the toll on logical justification. Direction wise, Sudheer Varma’s sensible comic touch and stylish presentation of Chaitu are the best appreciable parts. Synchronously camera work of Richard Prasad is glossy with well managed chases and action blocks. Karthika Srinivas timely editing could have improved the overall effect of second half. Music by Sunny MR is ordinary for songs and BGM wise; he was either silent or too loud with plenty of lift ups from World cinema. Composition of action blocks is so sleek from Peter Haines. Dialogues are also just moderate. Sterling production values of BVSN Prasad’s SVCC are top notch.
Performance wise, Naga Chaitanya looked stylishly handsome with attractive hair style. He has done the justice for character by excelling equally good in romantic, family and thrilling episodes. Slender beauty Kriti Sanon hasn’t got enough worth to show the acting skills. Necessity of showing Kriti as a smoker is not understood? Posani is as usual kicking in parts. His body language and dialogue delivery became monotonous as story proceeded. Fun portions of Sathya, Praveen etc are laugh worthy. Rao Ramesh is regular. Raghu Babu’s rivalry kind of confrontation with hero is irrational. Sapthagiri episodes are best example of intelligent comedy. Viva Harsha as sidekick to Posani is hilarious. Rest does not need a big mention.
Out of the Movie Dohchay: Director Sudheer Varma worked the magic in bits and pieces. Scenes wise, there are good numbers which are professionally well executed. First half has got ample entertainment as time passed breezily with neat introduction of characterizations. Sudheer Varma's sensible comic treatment is easily perceptible. Movie turns formulaic with missing of excitement and entertainment as we get into second half. Once Brahmanandam takes the driver’s seat in last 40 minutes or so, the shaky drive got some solidarity, although we have seen such fun in earlier Brahmi films.
Technically, ‘Dohchay’ is a satisfying product. Problem lied in missing of solid content, emotional quotient letting second half graph to fall down. Climax is also run of the mill making scapegoat of villain with fun filled, unbelievable instances. Twists and turns come in here and there which aren’t again so pinching. All in all, ‘Swamy Rara’ shades haunt us throughout the run of ‘Dohchay’ but this is not as superior product as the first one. Commercial faring of the film at BO needs to be wait and seen.
