Assembly Approves 3 Capitals For AP, But

AP Assembly Approves 3 Capitals

In a massive development, the Andhra Pradesh government today has approved the 3-city capital proposal in the three-day Assembly session called for this issue. The bills proposing the Secretariat to be situated in Visakhapatnam, High court in Kurnool and State Assembly at Amaravati too has been introduced in the Assembly.

The cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy in Amaravati has approved the findings of the report by the High Power Committee constituted to look into the 3-capital recommendations. The Andhra Pradesh cabinet approved the three-capital proposal during its meeting at the state secretariat.

The AP Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of All Regions Bill, 2020, also provides for dividing the state into various zones and establishing zonal planning and development boards.

While the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government has been firm on carrying out its new plans for "comprehensive, parallel and decentralised development, other political parties and citizens at large have opposed the ruling YSR Congress' move to relocate the state capital from Amaravati to Visakhapatnam, as already indicated by the Chief Minister on the floor of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on December 17.

The YSRC may be having a brute majority of 151 in the 175-member Assembly but it's in a woeful minority in the 58-member Council, with its numbers being just nine.

With 28 members, and possible support of BJP and others, the TDP could effectively stall albeit temporarily any legislation intended to alter the status quo of the capital.
