Ever since the YSR Congress Party government decided to introduce English as the medium of instruction in all government schools for Classes I to VI from the next academic year, a language war has erupted in Andhra Pradesh.
In this age of rapid globalization, the detractors, primarily the Opposition, has argued that the state should stick to Telugu to protect itself from cultural degradation, else it would endanger the regional language’s survival.
Spearheading the anti-English tirade is TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu and Jana Sena Party leader Pawan Kalyan. However, much to the shock of Pawan Kalyan, his own party MLA Rapaka Varaprasad supports the proposal of introducing English Medium in Government Schools.
“Actually, those who go to Government schools are Dalits or poor. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s Government took a great decision of introducing English Medium in Government Schools. Previously Chandra Babu made an attempt, but he failed to implement his plan of introducing English Medium in Govt Schools. We must appreciate Jagan for taking the wise decision.”
He added saying, “People of East Godavari district who flies to Gulf countries will get good jobs there, if they study in English Medium. In fact, people of Kerala who have good English skills are doing top jobs there.”
The JSP MLA's recent comments in support of the government have now become a hot topic in political circles in AP.
