It's an earth shattering decision from AP government. The government released a GO that permits the Commissioner of School Education to covert all Government, MPP and ZP schools into English Medium classes from class 1 to 8 from the academic year 2020-21. English medium Classes 9 and 10 will also be introduced in subsequent academic years. However, Telugu/Urdu shall be made as a compulsory subject.
De Facto, then YSR's government introduced parallel English medium sections in 6500 schools across AP in 2008 itself. Now that, the government made out that the admissions and retentions in Telugu medium sections have gradually been depreciating for the past couple of years, it decided to convert all TM sections into EM sections.
In the meanwhile, The State Council for Education, Research and Training (SCERT) is set to design and develop teachers' handbooks and training modules to cope with the demands of teachers who are teaching Telugu medium sections at the moment.
Furthermore, all District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) will be revived as English Language Teaching Centres (ELTCs). The government identified around 96 thousand teachers to get trained to fit in EM sections. They will be given extensive and intensive training soon. On the other hand, the commissioner has been directed to ensure teacher-pupil ratio is thoroughly maintained in all schools. He is further directed to prepare an indent for the supply of adequate number of textbooks on the first day of next academic year itself.
