A woman seen breastfeeding a baby on the cover of the popular Malayalam magazine Grihalakshmi has been the center of debate on social media. The picture is part of a campaign called "Breastfeed Freely", which aims to stop shaming women breastfeeding in public.
As per reports, the cover has received mix responses on social media with many criticizing the image but a majority people have glorified the magazine for the bold step towards women liberation.
Speaking to a national daily, Dubai-based actor and model Gilu Joseph said she was not apprehensive about appearing on the cover, and that she considers breastfeeding a mother's privilege. "I have only done things that I have believed is right for me. I must have failed, but I have no regrets," Joseph said.
A Kerala based advocate has filed a criminal case against Malayalam magazine Grihalakshmi yesterday. It is being alleged that the picture is of a lewd nature and degrades women. The complaint thus alleges commission of offences punishable.
Curiously, the campaign is supported by poets and writers across Kerala.
