Former mayor of Kurnool Bangi Ananthaiah, who was at the forefront fighting corruption and known for innovative ways of detecting graft in mufti attempted suicide on Monday.
According to sources, the former Telugu Desam party leader attempted to end his life near the District Collectorate by hanging himself to the statue of NTR.
However, his supporters rescued him and shifted him to the Mahatma Gandhi District Hospital. His condition is stated to be critical.
Disappointed by his failure to secure a seat for the Rajya Sabha, he is stated to have attempted the extreme step.
Earlier, Anantaiah lodged a complaint with the police in Kurnool stating that TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu, K E Krishna Murthy and others were trying to harm him. The TDP supremo had suspended him from the party for lodging a complaint against him and others.
