“Only this time, the prices of different pulses have escalated significantly during the past two weeks. A kilogram of red gram that was sold around Rs 70 last week now carries a price tag of about Rs 92 a kg,” he added.

Unable to control the price rise, the State Government had reduced the monthly quota of red gram supply from 1 kg for a white ration card holder to half-kilogram, he added.

He said that usually some varieties of pulses are imported from Maharashtra and Karnataka but this year owing to poor rainfall and low production the supplies dwindled.

This apart, poor enforcement on illegal hoardings of essential commodities by suppliers to create artificial crisis is a major cause for increase in prices, he explained.
