The Telangana State Legislative Assembly on Saturday paid rich tributes to those who laid down their lives for the cause of statehood for Telangana region.
As soon as the House met on Saturday, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao moved a resolution paying tributes to the martyrs. He first paid rich tributes to Telangana ideologue Prof Jayashankar. He said Prof Jayashankar joined the Telangana movement as a student in 1948-52. He inspired hundreds of youth to join the movement and remained firm on his demand throughout his life. He said it was sad that Prof Jayashankar was not around when the lone and ultimate goal of his life has been accomplished.
Recalling the Telangana movement of 1969, KCR said that hundreds of youth sacrificed their lives and careers during the struggle. He said as many as 369 lives were lost in police firing during 1969 movement. The agitation turned more severe in the last one decade wherein nearly 1500 people laid down their lives seeking statehood for Telangana. He said it was K Srikanth Chary's sacrifice which shook everyone in 2009.
The Chief Minister said that the people of Telangana would remain indebted to the martyrs for their great sacrifice. He said that the TRS Government would take all possible measures to take care of the families of the martyrs.
All opposition parties including Congress and Telugu Desam Party supported the resolution. Speaking on the resolution, the legislators said that the sacrifices made by the youth and students would always be remembered.
They asked the government to expedite the payment of monetary relief to the families of martyrs, withdraw cases booked during Telangana agitation and build memorial for the matyrs, especially for Srikanth Chary.
