YSR Congress Party honorary president YS Vijayamma on Tuesday demanded that the State Government pay compensation of at least Rs 10,000 to the farmers who lost their crops due to heavy rains under the impact of cyclone Neelam.
Talking to reporters after visiting the flood-affected areas around Bheemavaram of West Godavari district, Vijayamma alleged that the government has completely failed to provide relief and rehabilitation to the flood victims. She also criticised Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy for visiting New Delhi at a time when thousands of people were hit by floods and heavy rains.
Vijayamma said that her late husband and former Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy wanted to modernise the Godvari River at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore as a permanent solution to flooding. However, she said that the failure of the present government to complete the project has caused immense damage to farmers in the recent floods. She demanded that the government take measures to complete the Godavari modernisation project.
The YSRCP leader also interacted with the flood victims at BV School in Bheemavaram. She exhorted the YSRCP leaders and workers to help the victims at their levels.
