TDP plans 'Maha Dharna' over water for Delta region

The Telugu Desam Party will stage a ‘Maha Dharna’ on the Prakasam Barrage on Saturday to highlight the plight of farmers affected due to non-release of water from Nagarjuna Sagar Dam to Krishna delta region.

Addressing a press conference at NTR Trust Bhavan on Wednesday, Mylavaram MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao said that farmers from Krishna, West Godavari, Guntur, and Prakasam districts would participate in large numbers to "wake up the State government from its deep slumber". Stating that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy pompously announced that the government would release 15 TMC to the Delta region, he said that the government washed off its hands off by releasing a mere 3.5 TMC of water.

Umamaheshwar Rao said that the government was not making any effort to file counter affidavit in the High Court before August 27. Stating that 84 TMC of water was sufficient to generate hydel power, he alleged that the government has totally failed to supply qualitative coal for the power generation.

The TDP leader also accused the Chief Minister of participating in the Indiramma Baata programme without bothering about people’s problems.

Meanwhile, TDP leader Dhulipala Narendra alleged that the crops in the region withered due to frequent power cuts and causing huge damage to the distressed farmers.  To highlight these issues, the ‘Maha Dharna’ is being organised, he said.
