T- issue adds fuel to Parliament din

The Parliament is faced with a piquant situation where the Opposition members were protesting against the division of Uttar Pradesh, while some members from the treasury benches demanding for a separate State of Telangana.

The first day of the 21-day winter session was adjourned amidst the din of vociferous protests on varied subjects from the Opposition Parties, while the demand for Telangana statehood stood out as it came from the treasury benches.

While Speakers of both the Houses were grappling with the slogan shouting members on demands ranging from protest against the proposed division of Uttar Pradesh state into four to allegations against Home Minister P Chidambaram’s alleged role in the telecom scandal, Congress MPs from Telangana were cynosure of all eyes for their demands coming from the ruling party.

Though nothing was heard in the din, Telangana MPs carried placards to register their feelings.

The MPs from both the houses held demonstrations outside the House near the Gandhi statue and raised slogans in favour of Telangana state.

Soon after session began, multiple issues were raised from the Opposition benches and both Houses of Parliament were adjourned without transacting any business.

In Lok Sabha, when the question hour was taken up, SP and BJP members from UP created ruckus on the division of the State into four parts, as a resolution to this effect was passed in the State assembly, while Congress members from Telangana used their lung power demanding a separate state.

Speaker adjourned the House till noon and when the situation did not improve after it re-assembled, the House was adjourned for the day. The Upper House was adjourned immediately after making obituary remarks.

This must be the first time in the history of Parliament that protests from treasury benches have been coming ever since the Telangana issue came to the fore a couple of years ago.

The contrasting situation has put many parties in a fluid situation. BJP, which claims of creating new states during NDA is supporting Telangana on one hand and opposing the division of Uttar Pradesh on the other.

TDP, the main opposition party in the State, has lost control on its cadre and at no point of time did it spell out its stand clearly.

Of the left parties CPI, which expelled MLA D China Malliah for raising the Telangana Bogey, is now in favour of a separate state while CPM says it stands for a united Andhra Pradesh.

Congress itself is on a sticky wicket as it is facing revolt from within and it rebels on shouting slogans out in the open.
