The prisoners languishing in the jails may soon have the facility of speaking to their families on phones.
An indication to this effect has been given by Home Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy.
Clarifying on the point, the Home Minister told media persons at the Secretariat on Friday that a proposal was under study to provide this facility.
She admitted there may be some truth to reports that the prisoners were handling cell phones while in jail. Ms Indra Reddy warned that those responsible will not be spared for the supply of the cell phones to them. This includes officers, she added.
Earlier this month, two mobile phones were found, buried in the ground near Krishna barrack on the premises of Cherlapally Central Jail. The phones were dug out during an inspection, prison Superintendent KL Srinivasa Rao had revealed. The Jail official had added that one of the phones had a SIM card in it.
The inspections were carried out after a riot broke out in the Jail.
Speaking on the separate Telangana statehood issue, the Home Minister stated that the Ministers belonging to Telangana region would go to New Dehli and meet the High Command for mounting pressure on the apex leadership for realising their demand.
The date when the Ministers would go to New Delhi has not been fixed so far, she clarified.
