Rocking Star Yash and Srinidhi Shetty starrer KGF Chapter 1 recently crossed 100 crore gross mark to become the first Sandalwood movie to achieve the feat. No other Kannada film had come close to the mark. The film made impossible possible having dream run in its first week, not just in Karnataka or other southern states, it was remarkable in northern states as well.
Now, with KGR grossing 100 Cr, all the southern industries have attained the great feat. However, Bollywood accomplished 100 cr mark in 90’s itself.
Hum Aapke Hain Koun was the first Indian film to gross over 100 Cr, and when adjusted for inflation, is the highest grossing Hindi film of the 1990s and also still one of the highest-earning Bollywood films ever.
In Tollywood, mega power star Ram Charan’s Magadheera was the first film to enter 100 cr club. The SS Rajamouli directed film remained highest Telugu grosser for ages, until Power Star Pawan Kalyan’s Attarintiki Daredi broke the record. Magadheera indeed remains to be one of the classics of Telugu cinema.
Super Star Rajinikanth and Shankar’s sensational film Sivaji was the first film to reach 100 cr gross mark in Kollywood. The film was a super hit in all southern languages. It was the first collaboration between Rajini and Shankar who later worked together for Robot and 2.0.
Malayalam super star Mohan Lal’s high octane action entertainer Pulimurugan directed by Vysakh was the first Mollywood film to gross 100 cr at box office. The film made on huge budget had broken all previous records to emerge as Mollywood’s industry hit.
