Thalaiva released with Time to Lead tagline. Vijay during that time planned political entry following troubles over his previous films. Time to Lead made the ruling AIADMK furious and the film was released only after the tagline was removed and few dialogues muted.

Katti too faced huge protests with many Tamil parties and organisations questioning Vijay's intention on teaming up with Subhaskaran, producer having links with Sri Lankan president Rajapakse who was antagonising the Tamlians in the nation. Following an explanation the film had a smooth relese.

During Puli release in 2015, IT officials raided Vijay and other unit members. This delayed the film release. Mersal which released last year landed in huge controversy. BJP opposed the criticism of GST and dialogues in the film. Reports have it that BJP powered Mersal's average collections turning it into a blockbuster.

His recent release Sarkar too landed in huge controversy. Before its release the film landed in plagiarism controversy and earlier PMK objected to Vijay's Sarkar poster in which he was seen smoking. Ruling AIADMK is now opposing the film and demanding deletion of scenes showing breaking of free mixies, grinders and fans. They accuse the makers of insulting their government programs and schemes and more importantly former CM of Tamil Nadu, Puratchi Thalaivi Jayalalithaa.

DMK too is angry with the villain shown having three decades of experience and it felt that it targeted their patriach Kalaingnar Karunanidhi. However it remained silent while BJP too is opposing the film. Fans however are happy that these controversies are becoming stepping stones to their hero's success.
