The ripple effect of tussle between Andhra and Telangana is perfectly felt on Multiplexes in Hyderabad. With the release of most Telugu movies being shelved due to the volatile situation, theatres and multiplex owners are beginning to feel the pinch as their ticket sales plummet.
A spokesperson from INOX and Cinemax, declare that they are saved to the most by releases of ‘Avatar’ and Aamir Khan’s ‘3 Idiots’. Although all the major theatres in Hyderabd pull their revenue from telugu releases, but from last two weeks hindia dn English movies are becoming their life savers.
Right now, multiplexes and other theaters in the city are sitting pretty due to the successful runs of Avatar and yet to be released 3 Idiots. Once Avatar and 3 Idiots enter their third and second weeks, pressures toll on them for immediate Telugu releases which likely seem to be an impossible event.
Prasad Multiplex was forced to cancel over 100 shows in the past two weeks due to the agitation and the bandhs. As a result they have lost revenue worth Rs 1 crore. If the unrest continues into January and other Telugu movies are taken off screen, then sustainability might become a problem.
