Speculation on Gaddar awards panel duties

What will Gaddar awards panel will do

Gaddar Awards Committee Sparks Debate: Will Veterans Embrace New-Age Cinema?

The Telangana government's recently formed 16-member committee tasked with selecting recipients of the prestigious Gaddar Awards has ignited debate within the film fraternity. While the panel boasts veteran names like Suresh Babu, Allu Arvind, and Dil Raju, some young directors are expressing concerns about their ability to fully appreciate contemporary filmmaking.

"Most of the members are above 70 years old," one young director voiced, "and might not be able to judge new-age cinema where plots and narratives have evolved significantly. Actors have become more subtle, and the new wave of cinema is bolder and more experimental."

He added, "If these veterans prefer the traditional formula of upright heroes and conventional relationships over films that question societal norms, explore darker themes, and traverse grey areas, then it could be a difficult situation."

However, a close friend of a committee member countered these concerns, stating, "Most of them are actively watching new films and are well-versed in modern storytelling. They are uniquely positioned to judge movies because they have witnessed the evolution of cinema and can understand changing patterns."

The committee is currently working on drafting guidelines for selection and will be inviting applications from filmmakers. A separate jury will be formed to select winners in various categories. While the possibility of one or two committee members joining the jury hasn't been ruled out, it's still early to discuss.

The committee's focus will be on making the awards ceremony memorable for the entire film fraternity, encompassing both veteran and young filmmakers. "Young filmmakers are naturally eager to receive recognition for their innovative work," said another director. "Winning awards for veterans might feel like a repetition, while recognizing fresh talent is exciting and invigorating."

The composition of the Gaddar Awards committee and the selection process are sure to be closely scrutinized. Will the veterans embrace new-age cinema, ensuring a fair and representative selection process, or will the awards remain rooted in tradition? The film community will be watching closely.
