The Kerala Story, a compelling narrative that resonated with audiences, emerged as the top profit-making and successful Hindi film in terms of ROI in 2023. Vipul Amrutlal Shah's cinematic gem touched the hearts of millions, grossing 288.04 crores in India and 15.64 crores overseas, for a worldwide gross collection of ₹303.97 crores.
The film's premise centers around the alleged risk of young women in Kerala being influenced and brainwashed into joining terrorist organizations. The initial portrayal of the story, involving over 32,000 Kerala women allegedly influenced by Islamic fundamentalists, sparked online backlash and controversy. In response, the number was later revised down to three women.
Amidst the controversy, producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah defended the film's intent, stating, "When we present our facts and figures, people will get the answers. Whether they choose to accept them or not is their choice. Director Sudipto Sen has researched extensively for four years before starting the film. We are making a film on a big tragedy. If I feel that I want to tell this story as a filmmaker, then, discussion on whether I am pro-establishment or not will only reflect an individual's point of view."
