Police set up committee to restrain airing of obscene in TV channels

Following the directions of Andhra Pradesh High Court on restraining the airing of obscene and uncensored scenes on  TV channels, the state police department on Friday constituted a special committee to ensure that these channels execute  the programme code as envisaged in Rule 6 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1995.

Talking to reporters after convening a review meeting with private TV channel staff members here, Hyderabad City Police Commissioner A K Khan said the committee set up by the department will consists of three members.

The committee will take all steps to see that TV channels follow the programme code and implement the High Court directions, he added.

If any channel violates the Cable Television Network Rules 1994, then the police departments will immediately issue show-cause notice seeking their explanation. This rule comes into  force  from  March  22, the Poice commissioner  added.

The rule clearly specifies the responsibility of  these channels while airing news, Khan noted.

The High Court while disposing a petition observed that to improve their viewership, the channels were creating sensation and indulging in acts which are harming the  society  and  creating  differences among the  communities.

One channel shows provocative speeches while the other resorts to showing indecent, obscene and vulgar things. On account of some of these abusive visuals, people are becoming violent and are trying to create havoc in the state, the court observed.
