Anantapur,Dec 15: Tension prevailed at Sri Krishnadevaraya University here on Tuesday after the police canecharged the agitating students in a bid to disperse them.The cops also arrested two students and two employees of the University while they were protesting against proposed bifurcation of state and opposing the order of Vice-Chancellor Kusuma Kumari closing down all hostels.Sensing trouble on the campus,Kusum Kumari ordered closure of all hostels till Dec 27.However,the order boomeranged on the University administration after the students and the staff staged a dharna and raised slogans against the Vice-Chancellor demanding the withdrawal of the impugned order.
The students also urged the V-c to tender her resignation to the post.They also threatened to commit suicide en masse in the event the V-c did not withdraw her order closing the hostels.They demanded the transfer of Director General of Police Charu Sinha, who ordered the police to lathicharge the students if they do not budge from their postures.The VC assured the students and the staff that she would ask the police to lift all cases against them.Meanwhile, TDP legislator P Kesav said Chief Minister K Rosaiah has assured him to transfer DGP Charu Sinha from Anantapur after the lathicharge on peaceful agitators.
