Havelock Bridge of Rajahmundry city has historical importance. This old railway bridge was constructed in 1897 and was decommissioned in 1997. It was the connecting link between Howrah and Chennai for 100 years. However, the railway department, recently, has decided to sell the scrap of the bridge and an estimation Rs.200 crores was made by the department. Having heard the decision of Indian Railways, the people of Rajahmundry started agitations to save the bridge. They demanded for the beautification of the bridge and they wanted it to be one of the historical tourist sports of the state.
Meanwhile, the agitations of the people to save Havelock Bridge, have been brought to the notice of the Union Minister for Tourism, Dr.K.Chiranjeevi. He straightaway assured that the Tourism Ministry would adopt the bridge and release funds to develop the bridge as the tourism spot.
