Visakhapatnam,Oct 28: Tension prevailed in the Gangavaram Port  near  Visakhapatnam here  on Wednesday.The  local fishermen of Gangavaram and Dibbapalem villages, who were directly affected by the construction of the port, demanded jobs  in the  port  which is  managed by Gangavaram Port Ltd., a special-purpose company floated by D. Venkata Satyanarayana Raju,who serves as its managing director.Alleging  that  the   locals  were  not  given  the   priority of  getting  jobs in the Gangavaram  port and inadequate rehabilitation package the  locals  brought down  a  wall constructed by the  Port authorities.

Following  an  altercation between the port  authorities and the  locals, the police  were deployed and  the  situation was  brought under  control but uneasy  calm  still prevails in  this  area.The  construction of the port began in December 2005,and commercial operations commenced in August 2008. The port was formally inaugurated in July 2009, by late  Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.
