India dropped by 11 places to be ranked at 95th position in Transparency International Corruption Index. This global rating agency compiles annual list of countries based on their ranking on a scale of 1 to 10 has placed India below China but above our neighbor Pakistan. Of the total of 183 countries, China ranked 75th while Pakistan is placed at 134th position.
India sinking in global corruption index is not a surprise for political observers and social activists because of high profile cases on financial irregularities lying before Investigation Agencies from past one year. List includes 2G Spectrum Scam, Commonwealth Games scandal, Adarsh Housing Society Case, Aircraft Purchase and Illegal Mining which involves several politicians, bureaucrats and corporates landing behind bars.
New Zealand, on the other hand was ranked number one in index as the least corrupt country while, Denmark and Singapore stand at second and fifth respectively. Australia shares eighth position with Switzerland. Somalia and North Korea were worst performers.
