Hyderabad, Oct 7 :
Many low lying areas in Repalle town and 20 adjoining villages in Guntur district were submerged in water following the breach in right embankment of the Krishna river canal on Wednesday. The death toll according to Government officials is put at 65 in Andhra Pradesh when reports last came in. ``The flood waters are receding fast but still it takes a lot of time to get back to normalcy,’’ relief Commissioner Dinesh Kumar said.
A number of villages in Ibrahimpatnam, Jaggaiahpet and ChandarlApadu mandals of Krishna district still remain under water. The clear weather and restoration of some of the roads enabled the officials to carry out the relief and rehabilitation works at a brisk pace.
The authorities are keeping their fingers crossed over the safety of flood banks along the river course that protect the villages from flooding. The flood banks stretch over 182 kms in Krishna and Guntur districts. Already, the river embankments at some places have breached, leading to submergence of several villages.
