C U Soon Review

Malayalam industry is coming up with some mind-blowing films of late and few of them are being remade in Telugu. Guess what, a film called C U Soon with popular stars like Fahad Fazil, Roshan Mathew and Darshana Rajendran was made in lockdown plays out entirely on computers and smartphones. It renders a simple story of love, loss and reclamation in a socially-distanced format that is not only thrillingly eccentric but also reliably effective. The film offers a unique viewing experience.

C U Soon starts off on a slow note. Jimmy Kurien (Roshan Mathew) matches with a girl on Tinder. Her name is Anumol Sebastian (Darshana Rajendran), and they two soon start liking each other. Jimmy discovers that there may be more to her than meets the eye, and reaches out to his cousin Kevin Thomas (Faasil) for help.

For non-Malayali viewers, they obviously have to repeatedly direct their gaze to the bottom of the screen for the English subtitles, which makes the decrypting of the complexities of the film that much more difficult.

Fahadh Faasil comes up with yet another exceptional performance. Neither does Roshan Mathew miss a beat as he goes from being a smitten young man to becoming a victim of circumstances partly of his own making but wholly beyond his control. Darshana Rajendran delivers a moving portrayal of a girl of many shades.

Director Mahesh Narayanan takes his characters to the edge of an online nightmare, but then heads in the direction of a decidedly more old-fashioned ending.

We at CJ recommend our viewers to watch the film for some remarkable performances and experimental story-telling. The film is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
