No Comedy Capers, Only Rotten Crap

Gone were the days in Tollywood when people used to get treated with some health comedy capers, hilarious entertainers from the Tollywood filmmakers.

Of late, Tollywood filmmakers promote their films as comedy capers. But except for few, all of them turned out to be rotten crap. Except for few films like Agent Sai Srinivas Atreya, Brochevarevarura, F2, mostl of them like Tenali Ramakrishna BA BL, Silly Fellows, Vajra Kavachadhara Govinda, Nene Khedi No 1, Three Monkeys and Bhagya Nagara Veedhulo Gammathu turned out to be disasters.

Bandla Ganesh revealed that producers and distributors once considered comedy capers as the safe bet but now they hit a roadblock. Almost all comedy heroes like Sapthagiri, Sunil, Allari Naresh, Srinivas Reddy, Priyadarshi, Dhanraj tasted flops and the situation is so bleak that producers do not want to take a risk doing a comedy film with a budget of just Rs2-5crs.

Gopi Mohan attributed the situation to the falling standards of comedy in the films. He said the upcoming writers are failing to come with healthy comedy and are depending on spoof, dark humor or slapstick comedy which affected the viewers. He said a writing comedy scene is a serious task. Kona Venkat says they have taken scripts that had scope for comedy and came with scenes around relatable characters that paid off. He says memes and other things can be passed off on WhatsApp but for comedy, filmmakers should raise the bar. Gopi Mohan said media trolls on politicians and celebrities in the films affected the comedy capers.

Lagadapati Sridhar says new-age directors do not have flair for comedy. He said he readied a script for the sequel for Evadi Gola Vaadide, but he is not able to find a suitable director. He said he grew up watching movies of Jandhyala, Relangi Narasimha Rao, EVV Satyanarayana and the current lot does not have such caliber. He said some filmmakers and writers are rehashing old concepts and the success of Jabardast kind of shows impacted the comedy capers.
