R Narayana Murthy is renowned as Peoples Star for his powerful take on burning issues in the society without adding any commercial elements. He refused to star in powerful cameos in few films and one amongst them is NTR's Temper. Rumors have it that Puri Jagannath offered the role of Posani to Narayana Murthy which he rejected it.
Narayana Murthy said, “Many filmmakers offered powerful specials in their films. However I felt after directing, producing and doing lead role in my films, if I do special roles, I will degrade myself and settle as a character artist. So I refused those roles. Puri Jagannath asked me to do the role in Temper. Similarly Harish Shankar, Dil Raju, Sekhar Kammula asked me. I have been protecting Narayanamurthy brand which I built since two decades. Should I do small roles and spoil it?”
Narayana Murthy revealed, “I was part of Visakha Ukku-Andhrula Hakku, Jai Andhra, Jai Telangana, Anti liquor movement etc. My property is a mat, pillow and two pair of clothes. Many times Governments promised me houses. I refused house in Chitrapuri Colony. Rajasekhar Reddy offered 10 acres land in Vizag. I rejected it. KCR offered Double bedroom flat but refused it.
I donated generously to hospitals, colleges, borings, community halls but my name will not appear anywhere. I earned in crores and distributed everything. TDP offered me Kakinada ticket thrice but I rejected it. YSRCP offered Tuni seat and PRP invited me in 2009. I am with the people and doing revolutionary films."
On threats, he said, “I may be the only director who must have faced so many censor problems in the country. Right from Artharatri Swatantram till Annadata Sukhibhava, all films faced censor problems. I faced more trouble for Laal Salaam. The then CM Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy remarked 'Why are you making such films Narayanamurthy'. He even threatened that if he does not stop, Intelligence and IG will encounter you. For Cheekati Sooryulu I did not get permission for shooting. Chandra Babu Naidu had to intervene. When a film got stuck up at the censor board, Anupam Kher intervened and got the clearance. Police vans used to go on vigil round the theatres when my films released. Those who carried bags were taken aside and were interrogated.”
