Why Majili Worked, Why Not Jersey?

Naga Chaitanya’s Majili and Nani’s Jersey released in two weeks gap. While the Shiva Nirvana directed film got decent to good ratings from critics, Jersey was unanimously praised by critics. Interestingly, while Majili is turning out to be a biggest blockbuster for Chay, Jersey is not up to the mark at box office, much surprisingly to Nani and trade pundits.

Why Majili worked and what went wrong for Jersey? No film impressed Telugu audience after F2 and movie buffs were waiting keenly for a clean entertainer. Majili indeed awed them, so the film did wonders at box office. More importantly, the film had no competition for first two weeks until the release of Jersey. Even after the release of Jersey, Majili did decent business.

Actually, Majili had opened remarkably well in A centers. But, the film faced strong competition from Raghave Lawrence horror comedy Kanchana 3 in B and C centers. And, now Avengers: Endgame is killing Jersey’s chances in A centers. In overseas, Jersey’s business is almost coming to end. While Avengers Endgame collected $ 153 Million on day one including premieres on Thursday, Jersey raked in just $30K on Friday, since the film is lifted from many centers in USA. 

The other factors that affected Jersey collections are music and lead actress. Anirudh Ravichander provided fascinating background score, but the songs are not up to the mark. In fact, no single song became a chartbuster. Shraddha Srinath is not a known face to Telugu audience and she didn’t look dazzling in the film.
