The Chief Minister, Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, on Wednesday released a stamp on the noted freedom fighter, Pingali Venkaiah, the man who designed the Indian tricolour.
Releasing the stamp at a function held at Secretariat on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said that the stamp would be priced at Rs 5 and would be available at four GPOs including Hyderabad, Kurnool, Visakhaptanm and Vijayawada from August 12.
He said that the India Post (Philately) division has honoured Pingali Venkaiah, the designer of the national flag, by releasing a postal stamp recognising his services.
Chief Post Master General Sunder Rajan said that though the postal department initially decided to release the stamp on August 2 to coincide with the 132nd birth anniversary of Venkaiah, however, it was deferred.
Sri Pingali Venkaiah Charitable Trust managing trustee and social worker K H S Jagadamba said, “Our toil of eight years (since 2001) will be finally realised with the release of a stamp on Pingali Venkaiah. We all feel proud as a person from Andhra Pradesh will be getting this unique recognition."
The family members of Pingali Venkaiah were also present in the function.
