Basically, a mass entertainer is nothing but a movie which is watched by a large number of people. However, our journos and filmmakers have changed the meaning of a Mass Film. As per their definition, a Mass Film is a one which has all the commercial ingredients such as rough and tough get up and character sketch of heroes, dances, fights, romance and punch dialogues. In contrast, a family entertainer deals with affectionate relations and sentiments among various characters in movies.
Critics, however, do not have good opinion on Mass Films. They are of the opinion that Mass Films are made just to earn profits and the producers have no concern on conveying social messages in those films.
Going by the 83 years history of Tollywood, it is understood that Mass Films showed stronger impact among the people and got the heroes earned great fame as mass heroes. Incidentally, one mass hit is said to be an equivalent to five family hits. In spite of having less hit ratio than family heroes, some of the mass heroes outsmarted family heroes in terms of craze and image among the people.
Late NTR had less hit ratio than late ANR. Even then, NTR stood as the number one just because of his mass following. Similarly Krishna showed his upper hand in mass craze on late Sobhan Babu despite having poor success rate. Balakrishna also maintained very poor success percentage. Yet again, some of his blockbuster hits of his brought him the fame as a mass hero. But then, there are very few heroes like Megastar Chiranjeevi, who maintained good success rate apart from being a mass hero and being an all rounder with various roles he enacted.
