64-year-old Droupadi Murmu, an NDA candidate won the presidential elections in a virtual landslide by defeating the opposition candidate Yashwanth Sinha. Her victory turned out to be a mere formality the moment her candidature was announced and it was proven today when she got 53% of the votes in the third round itself. She won more than 64 per cent valid votes in a day-long counting of ballots of the MPs and the MLAs and will be succeeding the current President Ramnath Kovind.
In the process Droupadi Murmu created history by becoming the first tribal woman to become the President of India.Apart from it,she is the first President to be born after India's Independence and is the youngest to become the President. She is the second woman President of India. The moment her candidature was announced,there was split in the opposition ranks and even today overwhelming cross voting was witnessed.
