The state government is considering amending the prison law and making it more flexible for prisoners, stated Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy.
Talking to reporters after reviewing the situation in jails chaired by Chief Minister K Rosaiah with top officials of the department at the secretariat on Wednesday, the Minister said the government will introduce a bill in this connection in the Monsoon season of Assembly.
She said the government would amend the law for those who have served jail terms of over six months so as to utilize them for social service.
The Minister said the Government will also increase the daily allowance for prisoners from Rs 20 to Rs 50. Efforts are on to set up industries under public-private partnerships in the jails and help provide employment to prisoners.
The Chief Minister also cleared a proposal to establish Business Process Outsourcing centres or call centres in jails to provide employment to young prisoners.
The government would also establish a fund to help the victims of prisoners soon. “The Chief Minister has responded favourably to all these reforms,” she said.
