No illegal detentions, says Khan to SHRC

Responding to the State Human Rights Commission, City Police Commissioner Ak Khan on Wednesday denied that the police arrested innocent youths on charges of 'indulging in various acts of violence and arson' during the recent communal strife.

The written reply by the police chief to the directions issued by the SHRC came after a GHMC corporator belonging to the Majlis Bachao Tehreek accused the police of arresting innocent youths and keeping them in undisclosed locations.

The police chief, in his reply contended that though the petitioner had given a list of 31 names who were missing, only 14 persons were arrested and remanded them in judicial custody while eight others were released on the same day.

The reply also stated that the petitioner had not provided details of the nine other youths or addresses.

Khan also denied the allegations that the youths were ill treated and tortured in custody, and said the parents of the accused were informed of the arrests.
