Police on Monday registered a case against All India Majli-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president and MP Asaduddin Owaisi for defying curfew orders and took into custody 165 persons in connections with the communal riots in the the city.
According to a senior police officer, the case against the MP was registered in connection with a protest he led in front of the Charminar police station when curfew was in force.
Assistant Commissioner of Police K Narasimha Reddy said 152 cases were registered and 165 people arrested and sent to judicial remand in connection with the communal strife which hit the city between March 27 and March 31. Over 100 persons were taken into preventive custody and later let off.
Two persons were killed and over 90 others injured in the communal clashes due to arson, mob attacks, stabbing, heavy stone pelting and burning of vehicles.
An indefinite curfew was imposed in 17 police station limits of South Zone from March 29 and eight police stations of West, Central and East zones from March 30.
