TS Govt sanctions Rs. 230 Cr for storm water drains in city

The Municipal Administration & Urban Development Department, Government of Telangana on Friday accorded an administrative sanction for Rs. 230 crores to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for the improvement of bottle neck stretches of strom water drains in the city.

Earlier, the GHMC Commissioner had informed the State Government stating that due to continuous heavy rains in Hyderabad in September 2016, many areas in the city got inundated and damages were caused due to insufficient carrying capacity of the existing storm water drains. In the preliminary survey, 47 storm water drains strectched across 16.55 kms were identified for improvement.

The State Government, after examining the matter,  accorded administrative sanction of Rs. 230 crores to take up the above works immediately and also permitted the GHMC to call tenders for the works of Rs. 230 crores subject to condition that the expenditure is met from GHMC funds.

According to Voyants report on Storm Water Drains Kukatpally Hydraulic zone is the most critical zone out of all 16 zones. Of 1002 affected properties in the entire GHMC limits, 318 properties are affected in Kukatpally area alone.

GHMC Commissioner Dr. B. Janardhan Reddy directed the Engineering and Town Planning officials to expedite all the works pertaining to critical bottle necks over the nalas and to complete the entire exercise in the stipulated time. He said that slum dwellers, poor people who are affected will be rehabilitated in JNNURM housing scheme at Shamshiguda and other places and for private and patta land owners compensation will be paid as per the rules.
