Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan, Ponnam alleged that the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre and PDP-BJP of Jammu & Kashmir have failed to handle the situation in the State which turned quite volatile. He said that the casualties in J&K during BJP's two-year rule were much higher than the overall casualties during 10-year UPA regime. He said several civilians were killed in recent violence and the Amarnath Yatra had to be briefly suspended.

Ponnam said that instead of taking steps to restore normalcy in Jammu & Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was busy in foreign tours. Further, he said BJP National President Amit Shah has been finalising plans to create a communal divide in Uttar Pradesh. He said that the Congess party would not allow BJP to continue its polarisation drive. He also said that the Supreme Court has foiled attempts of BJP Government to dethrone the democratically elected governments in Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh.
