New Delhi,Dec 10: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday assured MPs representing Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rayalaseema regions that the Government would take a unanimous decision on according statehood to Telangana after consulting all sections of people.Convening an emergency meeting of members of Parliament from the state in the evening, the party supremo indicated that the government would protect the interests of the people of the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions simultaneously while implementing the decision to provide statehood to Telangana.The meeting assumes significance in the wake of a spate of resignations coming in from legislators including Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal and Rajya Sabha MP Mysoora Reddy in protest against the Congress core committee decision to bifurcate the state.
Earlier,Rajagopal met Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and handed his resignation over to her.A host of MPs who tendered their resignations expressed their dissent over the party High Command decision to split the state.Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kiran Kumar Reddy told newsmen in Hyderabad that 93 MLAs, cutting across regional barriers, have submitted their resignations.Those who put in their papers from the state include 53 belonging to the Congress, 29 Telugu Desam and 11 of Praja Rajyam.
