Tension prevailed in the Osmania University campus on Wednesday when a degree student allegedly committed suicide, citing delay in formation of Telangana as the reason.
Hundreds of students gathered near Arts College where the student, V Santosh, a native of Kuchalapur of Adilabad district, was found dead hanging with a tree. He is suspected to have committed suicide on Tuesday night. Santosh left behind a suicide note blaming the ruling classes for creating obstacles in the formation of Telangana State.
The angry OU students did not allow the police to shift the body to the Gandhi Hospital mortuary for autopsy. They wanted to take out funeral procession from the university to Gun Park. However, police did not permit the procession. The OU students also demanded that the body would not be shifted unless all ministers and MPs of Congress party from Telangana region resign from their posts.
The police also resorted to lathicharge when some students tried to take out a rally. A few students were also taken into custody.
Telangana Political Joint Action Committee chairman Prof M Kodandaram who visited the OU also demanded that the ministers themselves should participate in the funeral procession. He condemned the delay in the formation of Telangana State and said that the Centre was hesitant to take a decision on the statehood issue despite the fact that hundreds of students have committed suicide for the cause.
Following suicide, the OU Students Joint Action Committee called for a shutdown of all educational institutions in the Telangana region. Following tension, The University has also postponed all examinations scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
