Fifteen students sustained injuries when the police used batons to control a crowd during an election campaign by film actor and Praja Rajyam Party president K Chiranjeevi at Bangarpet in the border district of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
According to reports coming in, thousands of fans of the actor from neighbouring districts rushed to Bangarpet after news spread that the star would be arriving to campaign for the Congress candidate in the area for the election scheduled on April 9. The fans and students jostled when Chiranjeevi tried to alight from his car. Sensing situation going out of control, the police resorted to lathicharge, police said.
During the campaign, Chiranjeevi urged voters to vote for Congress and described the Bharatiya Janata Party government as being unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the campaigning ended in the evening in Bangarpet, Jagalur and Chennapatna Assembly constituencies, where bye-elections are being held on April 9.
