Tamil superstar Vijay is all set to embark on a statewide tour from December 2 to 27, 2024, across Tamil Nadu, ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The tour, which begins in Coimbatore and concludes with a major public rally in Tirunelveli, aims to connect Vijay directly with the public, strengthening his newly launched political party, Tamilaga Vettri Katchi (TVK). Vijay has announced that TVK will contest all 231 Assembly seats, but will not participate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, choosing to focus on the 2026 Assembly polls instead.
Veteran actor Rajinikanth has praised Vijay's successful political entry, calling his first major public meeting well-organized. Rajinikanth congratulated Vijay on the success of his debut rally, stating, "He conducted the conference very successfully. My greetings to him." However, he refrained from commenting on certain allegations made by TVK leaders during the rally. Vijay's entry into politics marks a significant moment, as he is the first major Tamil film star to do so since M.G. Ramachandran, the founder of AIADMK and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
As part of his tour, Vijay plans to appoint district-level office bearers and booth committee heads, recognizing and promoting leaders who played a key role in organizing the successful public rally in Vikravandi, Villupuram district, on October 27. This rally saw a massive turnout of over 300,000 people, demonstrating Vijay's significant influence and popularity. With his political debut anticipated to impact the state's political landscape significantly, all eyes are on Vijay's next moves.
Vijay's decision to enter politics has drawn comparisons to Rajinikanth's own abandoned plans to contest the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. However, Vijay's commitment to TVK and his vision for Tamil Nadu's future sets him apart. As the tour progresses, it will be interesting to see how Vijay's message resonates with the people of Tamil Nadu and how it shapes the state's political landscape in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly elections.
