Uppena Review, What’s Behind?

Vaishnav Tej, Krithi Shetty and director Buchi Babu Sana are making their debut with Uppena which is bankrolled by Mythri Movie Makers in association with Sukumar Writings. Devi Sri Prasad’s songs and an intriguing trailer hiked expectations on the film. Will it live up to all the high expectations?

Uppena Story Review:

Ashirvadam aka Ashi (Vaishnav Tej), son of a fisherman (Sai Chand), is in love with landlord Rayanam (Vijay Sethupathi)’s daughter Sangeetha aka Bebamma (Krithi Shetty) since childhood. Bebamma too falls for him at a magical moment. However, there are two hurdles for their relationship- while one is the disparity of social group, the other one is the punishment that Rayanam gives to Ashi with an intention of separating them forever. Did they overcome these two hurdles?

Uppena Artists, Technicians Review:

As told by Buchi Babu, soil stories have purity and there is purity in the love story of Uppena. His intention is to tell that love is not about physical relationship and presence of the one you loved the most is enough to lead rest of life. It’s a brave decision and he stick to it without worrying much about business equations and how audiences will receive it. His dealing of romantic and emotional scenes is proficient. Dialogues are substantial, wherein he gets good marks for his direction as well. However, he should have taken better care of second half which has excess drama.

Devi Sri Prasad and Shamdat are the real heroes behind the camera. While Shamdat with his slow motion visuals brought beauty to the love story, Devi Sri Prasad gave life with his music. Whenever we feel boring, songs and background gives relief. The songs will haunt you even after coming out of theatres and his impact is there throughout the film. There is no Uppena without these two technicians. Naveen Nooli’s editing was good in first half, wherein there are numerous boring scenes in second half which would have been chopped off. Production values of Mythri Movie Makers are top class.

Onto artists, Vaishnav Tej simply lived in the role. Though it is his first film as hero, he showed lots of maturity. First of all, he must be lauded for his guts of accepting the role that is challenging and has a shocking end. Krithi Shetty is another great find by Buchi Babu. True to the character, she is cute, bubbly and at the same time emotional. She acted according to the situation and she is here to stay long. Particularly, her smile is adorable. The way she performed, we can’t imagine any other actor in the role. She even dominated Vijay Sethupathi in climax. Vijay Sethupathi is exceptional. Although we have seen similar roles in many films, Vijay brings freshness with his impeccable performance. Sai Chand is another big asset as father of protagonist. All the other actors played their parts.

Uppena Review Rating Analysis:

Telugu cinema is witnessing very few films based on rural backdrop and after a long time a rustic film Uppena came for the verdict of audiences. Buchi Babu Sana seems to have convinced his boss Sukumar and producers to make the film as he wished. Although there’s very sincerity in his effort, the shocking element in the climax which is a perfect conclusion for novels may not convince one section of audiences.

The film begins with Vijay Sethupathi’s dialogues that goes, “Prema goppadaithe charithralono samadhulono kalapali gaanee, pelli chesukoni pillalni kani illallo kanapadithe daani viluva thaggipodu. Anduke premeppudu charithra lone untadi. Daaniki bhavishyath undadu.” This prepares us that there’s a shocking twist to this love story as well. After the introduction of the lead pair, we get to see a wonderful love story which is quite unusual due to freshness in the narration. Buchi Babu created magic with the charming love story. The situation of Jala Jala Jalapaatham is intriguing and it somehow makes up for the unexpected ending. Vijay Sethupathi’s oath gives an ideal interval twist.

Second half begins on intense note with Vijay Sethupathi making efforts to find the boyfriend of his daughter. The thirunallu episode is partially shown as the main twist connected to it is revealed in the climax. Nonetheless, narration turns bit boring after the lead pair elope to Odisha and then travel to different places in the country to protect themselves. This part is too lengthy and we literally feel their 6 months journey together. Then, the pre-climax after revelation of the actual twist is emotional and director made all efforts to convince his logic about love. It’s Krithi Shetty who manages to make her decision worthy with her career defining performance. The climax portion of an old man telling his daughter about deficiency in Lord Shiva’s idol sums up the story.

On the whole, Uppena is a film that tells a pure and rustic love story. There’s no doubt that the love story will charm all and sundry. Vaishnav Tej and Krithi Shetty impress big time on their debut, wherein Buchi Babu must be appreciated for his guts. Devi Sri Prasad’s music is the biggest strength and other technicians too gave their best. CJ goes with 2.75 rating and we recommend you to watch the film to witness a great love story on screen!
