Behind the Movie Varudu: Creative director Gunasekhar and stylish hero Allu Arjun’s deadly combination has created big hype for the movie. Mani Sharma’s music and Veturi’s lyrics got enough recognition before the release further increasing the enthusiasm of movie lovers. The suspense tag revolving around heroine and the importance of subject added with good production cost are put to litmus test today. Let us see, how this ‘Varudu’ fared.

In the Movie Varudu: Sandeep (Allu Arjun) is the only son of lovely couple Gopi and Vasundhara (Ashish Vidyarthi and Suhasini). Sandeep is not the regular kind of college going guy who loves to fall in love again and again. He enjoys partying with friends in pubs but has due respect towards our culture and traditions. As Sandeep has secured the Visa to fly the USA, his parents decide to find the right match and were surprised to know that their son believes only in arranged marriage.

Sandeep even loves to follow the old customs and forces their parents to arrange for a five days marriage that too by keeping the bride in real suspense as he wants to see her only during the time of wedding. As the bride Deepthi (Bhanu Sri Mehra) is now selected by Gopi and Vasundhara; entire family battalion now lands in her village for the marriage occasion and celebrations are on.

During the magical moment of ‘Jeela Karra Bellam;’ Sandeep and Deepthi face each other and were instantly in love (This is USP of the movie). During the final ritual in their marriage villain Diwakar (Arya) makes his entry and kidnaps Deepthi.

Diwakar and Prabhakar (Ahuthi Prasad) are cruel brothers who have eyed on the beauty of Deepthi. When Police officers (Nazar and Rao Ramesh) were strucked in a pity situation unable to help, Sandeep himself enters the battle and finishes Prabhakar to win his ‘Vadhuvu.’

Values of the Movie Varudu: Story is simple and straight with no innovativeness. But Gunasekhar has taken precautions by adding the traditional values like ‘Five Days Marriage,’ ‘Get together of families on a happy marriage occasion,’ ‘Sanctity and strong bonding in our Hindu traditional marriages’ etc to make the product much more relevant to this present generations where old traditions are quickly loosing their value. Unfortunately, the way how story is narrated lacked the required depth. The richness and typical flavor of Gunasekhar was visible partially in the movie. You feel pride of ‘Varudu’ only in glitches. Gunasekhar’s versatile handling of scenes in ‘Pelli Mandapam’ will elevate the movie in no time and make our eyes shine very brightly. The way how heroine is first showcased on the screen speaks about Gunasekhar’s peculiar taste and he is praise worthy only for that. The way Gunasekhar handled 12 minutes of marriage song joined by five minutes of duet totaling to 17 minutes of song in one stretch is of course a daring feat possible only for this director. And audiences were watching it pin drop silence. Camera work by RD Rajashekhar is top notch and the way he trapped the beauties of ‘Pelli Mandapam’ was good. Art work by Ashok is the main pillar of ‘Varudu’ as it brought the enough feel that was necessary for the movie. Editing by Antony was just average. Music by Mani Sharma was a big upset as the lyrically well acclaimed songs looked pale in sounding and even picturization (except the marriage song) looked dull. Dialogues by Thota Prasad were just not enough and audience demanded more.  Stunts by Shiva were energetic and climax was shot extra ordinary. Production values by Daanayya and Universal Media were high quality.

Performance wise Allu Arjun was brilliant. In first half although he was conservative; come second half he excelled in fights and emotional scenes. One department where Allu Arjun disappointed his fans is dances. Neither there were peppy numbers nor were those regular catchy moments from him.  Heroine Bhanu Sri Mehra comes late in first half. Audience clearly felt that the suspense and boost up build around this heroine was not totally deserved. Her introduction was magnified more by the occasion rather than by her beauty. As the movie progresses, Bhanu has caught the enough attention and overall she was just passed. Ashish Vidyarthi and Suhasini were good enough for their roles. Nazar, Rao Ramesh, Naresh were also just okay. Comedy wise Brahmanandam was a dud. Surprise pack of entire movie was villain artist Arya. His cruel acts, valor, impeccable acting abilities and physical appearance made the movie to reach a second level in second half. Strictly speaking, Arya overshadowed Allu Arjun and he is the main reason why second half has come better than first half. Dubbing by Ravi Shankar (Arundhathi ‘Bommali’ fame) for Arya was astonishing.

Out of the Movie Varudu: Basic line of the movie and subject has the shades picked from our epic Ramayanam. But the required depth that was necessary to create an impression was absent. Gunasekhar most of the time has concentrated on visual grandeur but not the real content which he was trying to convey. First half, audience were almost tired enough until the Telugu Wedding sequences and heroine arrives on the screen. Second half, Arya was the savior and it was only action entertainment from then on. There is no comedy in the movie and music wise very poor. If Allu Arjun, Arya’s presence, magnanimous camera work, mind boggling climax fight were to save the movie; the low pitched narration, lack of depth, missing comedy and poor script have done the needless damage. All in all, this Varudu is just an average product from Gunasekhar.

Cinejosh verdict of the Movie Varudu: Gunasekhar’s unimpressive and unbalanced marriage attempt.
