Very rarely we used to have films in sports backdrop before Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker initiated a trend with ‘Lagaan.’ Though the story backdrop was set in pre independence period, the game of cricket on which entire script ran connected extremely well with Indian audience who have cricket in their blood.
Later on, the success rate of many movies which were worked on different sports backdrops or sometimes even biopics or sometimes the patriotism joined into this sports based scripts have fared extremely well. Not just in Bollywood, the same wave was blown into South cinema. For example, ‘Sye, Kabaddi Kabaddi, Golconda High School’ and ‘Bheemili Kabaddi Jattu’ etc stood on top.
Now, the latest release of ‘Seethamma Andalu Ramayya Sithralu’ which had a major cricket episode pulling towards the climax is attracting audience very much. Reports say, Raj Tharun and team have performed very well in the last portions of film which is resulting in a positive Box Office effect. Good to see ‘Lagaan’ flavor still working.
