Padmashri Sukumari, the great artist who became most famous in Telugu with films like ‘Nirnayam’ and ‘Murari’ is no more. In ‘Nirnayam,’ she played Amala’s aunt while in ‘Murari,’ she played great-grand-mother to Mahesh Babu. She is basically a Malayalee and was into acting from the age of 10. She entertained us in different roles performing in nearly 3000 films. While lightning an oil lamp in a fucntion, she was caught in fire recently and suffered severe burns. Under critical-care treatment at a Hospital in Chennai, reports say that Sukumari developed cardiac arrest and was declared dead by doctors.
Sukumar is married to director Bhim Singh in 1959 and their only son Dr. Suresh Bhim Singh is a specialist in Genetics. On hearing the death news of Sukumari, entire South Indian film fraternity including Tamil Nadu Chief MinisterJayalalitha and Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy offered their condolences.
