Karthi Raises Police Welfare Concerns Asking Government For Weekly Off Promise
Actor Karthi has questioned the implementation of weekly holidays for Tamil Nadu police personnel, saying officers who work around the clock deserve adequate rest. He raised the issue at the Former Police Officers Public Welfare Trust’s 10th anniversary event in Coimbatore, highlighting the demanding nature of police duties.
Karthi said police personnel continue to face difficulties despite existing provisions for weekly rest. Tamil Nadu government orders introduced compulsory weekly offs for constables and head constables in 2021, while provisions for Sub-Inspectors and Special Sub-Inspectors followed in 2022. A 2025 Madras High Court case highlighted implementation concerns.
Addressing the gathering, Karthi reportedly urged the present TVK government to ensure that the promised weekly-off system reaches police personnel in practice. TVK chief Vijay had announced a Police Welfare and Working Conditions Act during the 2026 election campaign, including regulated duty hours and rotation based weekly offs for eligible personnel.
Karthi also spoke about the pressures faced by police officers, including cross state operations and growing social media scrutiny. He praised their dedication and said the media should support personnel working under challenging circumstances. The actor’s comments have brought renewed attention to police welfare and the implementation of weekly rest provisions in Tamil Nadu.
