DMDK founder Vijayakanth passes away.Actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth, renowned for his impactful roles in the film industry and distinguished political career, passed away on Thursday at the age of 71. He had been undergoing treatment at a local hospital after being admitted last month due to severe cough, fever, and respiratory issues. The diagnostic tests conducted earlier in the day confirmed that he had contracted the coronavirus, leading to his deteriorating health and eventual reliance on ventilator support.

Vijayakanth's significant contribution to both cinema and politics has left an indelible mark. In the realm of films, he earned the title "Puratchi Kalingar" (revolutionary artist) for portraying patriotic and heroic characters. His outstanding contributions were acknowledged with the prestigious Kalaimamani Award, the highest civilian honor in Tamil Nadu, and numerous other accolades.

Beginning his cinematic journey as an antagonist in the 1979 film "Inikkum Ilamai," directed by M.A. Kaja, Vijayakanth's prowess and versatility were evident in movies such as 'Doorathu Idi Muzhakkam' (1980), which was featured in the Indian Panorama of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). Throughout his extensive career, he starred in memorable films like 'Amman Koil Kizhakkaley,' 'Chinna Gounder,' 'Vaidegi Kathirundal,' 'Vallarasu,' 'Vanathai Pola,' 'Captain Prabakaran,' 'Ulavu Thurai,' 'Kannupada Pokuthayya,' 'Ramana,' and more. His final on-screen appearance was in the 2015 Tamil film 'Sagaptham.'

Transitioning into politics, Vijayakanth served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016. In 2005, he founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and later became an MLA, representing the Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies. In his political career, he made a lasting impact, leaving a void that will be felt deeply.

Vijayakanth is survived by his wife, Premalatha, and two sons, Vijay Prabhakar and Shanmuga Pandian. The entire film industry, as well as the political landscape, mourns the loss of a multifaceted personality.
