The MP had earlier taken an initiative to develop the open air auditorium into a closed air-conditioned hall. He had requested the government to rename the auditorium after former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, after the development work was completed.

His suggestion was welcomed by the government. It had accepted Mr Subbirami Reddy’s proposal and subsequently passed a GO.

This had led to the opposition parties condemning the state government’s move to rename the Lalitha Kala Thoranam after a former prime minister.

The Telugu Desam Party and all the Left parties alleged that the renaming of Lalitha Kala Thoranam would hurt the sentiments and emotions attached to crores of Telugu people and appealed to government to retain the old name itself.
